Actor in a Leading Role: Two actors in period dramas are nominees for Actor in a Leading Role: Denzel Washington (Fences), and Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge).
This is the eighth Academy Award nomination for Producer Scott Rudin (The Hours, True Grit, The Grand Budapest Hotel). This is the first Academy Award nomination for Producer Todd Black.

Actor in a Leading Role, Denzel Washington: Denzel Washington plays Troy Maxson, a middle-aged man whose bitterness over his sports career and life as a black man in 1950s Pittsburgh threatens to tear apart his family.
